Dinant regrets to report that a company security guard was shot and killed on August 7th, near the company’s El Chile plantation in the Quebrada de Arena community of Aguán Valley. Hector David Morales, a Dinant security guard, was shot dead while enjoying his day off. In accordance with Dinant company policy, Sr. Morales was unarmed.
Company spokesman, Roger Pineda, said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Morales. We are doing everything we can to support his family during this extremely sad time. We will collaborate with public authorities in their efforts to detain those responsible for this terrible crime and hope that they will be brought to justice quickly. In addition, we have begun our standard internal investigation and reporting process to gather the facts.”
The death of Sr. Morales closely follows the murders in May of José Wilfredo Morales and Carlos José Espino Paz, who were shot and killed during a robbery of a Dinant’s facility near the Quebrada de Agua community in Tocoa, Colón, Honduras. Neither Sr. Morales nor Sr. Espino Paz were carrying a firearm when killed. We understand that three suspects have been detained in relation to these murders.
Mr. Pineda continued, “We are deeply saddened by yet another murder of an innocent security guard in the Aguán region. This raises yet again the total number Dinant staff that have been murdered in the Aguán since 2010. We refuse to be intimidated by this long-running campaign by criminal elements in Northern Honduras, and will do everything we can within the Honduran legal framework to stop these crimes against the company and our staff. Once again, we extend Dinant’s open invitation to all concerned citizens to work with us, the Government, NGOs, civil societies, and financial institutions to find common ground and build a peaceful and sustainable solution for this region of Honduras.”
