Dinant updated statement on Cristian Martinez Perez

    Tegucigalpa, Honduras, February 3, 2015:

Corporación Dinant was delighted to learn that Mr. Cristian Martinez Perez, a 22-year-old man from the Panama village of Bajo Aguán who had been reported missing since Friday night, was found unharmed at around 9am on Sunday, February 1 in a private house near the Panama community.

As the Panama village is adjacent to Paso Aguán, Corporación Dinant’s African Palm plantation, our security
team offered to help the public authorities and members of the Panama community in their search for Mr. Martinez, providing unlimited access to our offices and plantations to the search parties, including members of the Gregorio Chavez Peasant Movement of which Mr. Martinez is an active participant.

Dinant recognizes the value and importance of engaging peacefully, constructively and transparently with all members of the community including those, like the Gregorio Chavez Peasant Movement, who hold different views about land rights in the Bajo Aguán. We are glad that we were able to work collaboratively with this organization, as well as the Panama Community, and are delighted that Mr. Martinez was found safe and well.

    Notes on Corporación Dinant

Uniquely in Honduras, Dinant is implementing the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights that govern how we vet, recruit and train our security men and women, and how they engage with the public. Dinant has removed all firearms from security staff and contractors at all plantations and factories in Honduras. Our security guards now carry only a baton, whistle, mobile phone and high-visibility vest. Dinant’s enhanced Security Manual – the result of months of consultation and 3,600 hours of training for staff and contractors – enforces the company requirement that security personnel act with respect and courtesy towards members of the public at all times. It draws on our Ethics Standards, our Human Rights Policy, and extensive training by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
